Roman Republic, characterized by a republican style of government, lasted for around 450 years. Starting in 509 BC with the overthrow of the Monarch lasting until around 29 BC at which time began the Roman Imperial period. Exactly when the Imperial period began is a matter of debate. The three most likely candidates: 44 BC with the appointment of Julius Caesar as dictator for life, the battle of Actium and the defeat of Mark Antony in 31 BC or with the granting to Octavian (Augustus) extraordinary powers in the 1st settlement in 27 BC.
