National Currency Notes of series 1902 were authorized be the Act of April 12, 1902 and carried a new design plus the designation “Series 1902. These National Currency notes were issued until July of 1929 at which time the change was made to small size notes. The first in the National Currency 1902 series was the Red Seal notes which, as the name implies had a red seal on the face. The first of these notes were shipped on March 17, 1902 to the Paintsville National Bank in Paintsville, KY. The red seal notes were followed by 1902 blue seal notes Date Backs. The 1902 Date Back notes carried the date 1902 – 1908 on the back. These were followed by the National Currency 1902 Plain Back notes which, of coarse have no dates shown on the reverse. Plain Back notes were issues from 1915 until 1929.
