The Boeotia Thebes Silver Stater was likely produced at the Boeotian principle city of Thebes. This type was produced starting in the early part of the forth century and end with the defeat of Thebes at the battle of Khaironeia. Thebes as the leader of the Boeotian Confederacy had long been a rival of Athens. Thebes fought with the Persians during the war in 480 BC under Xerxes. In 371 BC the Theban Army under Epaminondas defeated Sparta at the battle of Leuctra. Its was in 338 BC that an elite Theban unit known as The Sacred Band of Thebes was defeated by Philip II and his son Alexander (soon to “the Great”) at the battle of Khaironeia. Until then Thebes was the most powerful and influential city- states and was known for its silks.
