The Winged Liberty Head Dime is frequently referred to as the Mercury Dime. The obverse is a depiction of Liberty with the wings on her cap meant to symbolize liberty of thought, however the wings on her head give the appearance of the Greek God Mercury. Mercury Dimes were minted from 1916-1945 and was designed by Adolph Weinman. The AW monogram appears just below the right side of Liberty’s neck. The series is one of the most popular with collectors. Mercury Dime examples with full split bands on the reverse are highly desirable and in a number of dates and mint marks, very difficult to locate.
