The Buffalo Nickel is also known as the Indian Head Nickel. This nickel was produced from 1913-1938. James Earle Fraser is the designer of the Buffalo Nickel. The first 1913 nickels depict the buffalo standing on a mound. The design was modified to show the base as a flatter line. The model for the Buffalo Nickel is thought to be Black Diamond, a bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York City.
