The Indian Head Cent is a very popular series with collectors and depicts Liberty wearing an Indian headdress. Designed by James B. Longacre, the Indian Head Cent was minted from 1859 through 1909. This series consists of three different design varieties. Variety one features a laurel wreath on the reverse and variety two changed to an oak wreath reverse. Both Variety 1 and Variety 2 were produced in copper-nickel and were often referred to as “White Cents”. During the Civil War with a coinage shortage, tokens were issued by private parties that often mimicked the Indian Head Cent. Variety three of the Indian Head Cent was minted in bronze rather than copper-nickel as in Varieties 1 and 2.
