The Indian Head Cent depicts Liberty wearing an Indian headdress. Designed by James B. Longacre, the Indian Head Cent was minted from 1859-1909. Variety 1 features a laurel wreath on the reverse and variety 2 changed to an oak wreath reverse. Both Variety 1 and Variety 2 were produced in copper-nickel and were often referred to as “White Cents”. During the Civil War with a coinage shortage, tokens were issued by private parties that often mimicked the Indian Head Cent. Variety 3 Indian Head Cent was minted in bronze rather than copper-nickel as in Varieties 1 and 2.
